North Karkaghne Construction

The North Karkaghne section of the Ozark Trail runs from the Trace Creek section near Highways 32 & DD and runs some 25 miles to Oates, Missouri where it connects to the existing Karkaghne trail.  Paul Nazarenko of the US Forest Service is in charge of all trail planning and construction, and is the OTA's main contact as we build the trail.

Construction Report

We broke ground on this trail on December 16th, 2002 as a dozer team of four people put in 1/2 mile of rough trail.  Our first volunteer outing was December 21st, and five people put in 1/4 mile of finished tread.  Our next outing is January 5th.  Detailed work reports and a construction status map will be available in February.

Work Reports from the Planning Stage

It took 40 outings from December 2001 to September 2002 to flag the route for this trail.  We subdivided the trail into 11 segments and updated our work online to assist the environmental impact staff at the USFS.  For those interested, a list of maps and work reports can be found below:

Section Name Change

The Ozark Trail Council is in charge of section names for the trail, and is currently considering renaming the northern 25 miles of the Karkaghne.  We should have a new name for this section in October of 2003.
