Here we go again — One more OT-OHT outing to end the 2021  season building the connection between Missouri and Arkansas.

We will again base out of the UDALL campground and will arrive Thursday evening and do prep on Friday. We’ll meet up at the Udall campground at 8:30 am on Saturday and go to the build site from there. We may meet somewhere else depending on where everyone winds up saying as there are other options available nearby such as Dawt Mill Resort and Rocky Top Campground. We’ll provide that information in the detailed event email the week prior to the event.

The OTA will provide dinner on Saturday night and a pot luck breakfast on Sunday Morning. Weather permitting we may also build on
Sunday morning until 12:00 pm.

You are responsible for your meals on Friday, breakfast and lunch on Saturday.

There is  no water at the Udall campsite and we will have extra drinking fluids as well.  But bring your own water supply just in case.

Primitive camping at the Udall campground is available with a vault toilet and we will have alternate camping arrangements as we get closer to the build date.

Bring Sturdy work shoes ( hiking boots), long pants and be prepared for changeable weather. We’ll provide the gloves, safety glasses, helmets and tools.

Now, as to the general issue of trail building physical fitness… Building trail by hand is hard physical work. It puts stress on arms, shoulders, backs, legs and of course the heart and lungs. There is usually some kind of hike in carrying tools ( weighing 3-5lbs each), a day pack which holds a lunch, water ( 2 liters minimum), and any personal items an individual might need ( includes toiletry kit, first aid kit, rain gear, cold weather layer(s), etc.)
The hike distance varies but is usually .5 mile or less but it can be more. So an individual needs to be able walk over rough terrain carrying a load of 10-20 lbs in rough terrain.
This is a 2-way walk ( in at beginning of the day and out at the end of the day). A typical trail day starts at 8:30am and ends around 3-3:30pm.
We do not expect the average volunteer  to build more than 20-25 ft of trail. Many may only build 5-10 ft…and that’s ok .. It is hard work and lots of breaks are encouraged and the event leaders watch over everyone to make sure they are not overextending themselves, are hydrating, eating and in generally good shape. We will stop anyone who is showing  physical stress.

We are still being covid cautious so if you have been exposed to covid, been in a doctor’s office or hospital in the last 14 days prior to the event or you have symptoms consistent with covid
please do not come out.
