SUMMARY:Potosi-Johnson Shutins State PArk -- Americorp Week Nov 15-20
DESCRIPTION:Due to recent storm damage — we are shifting this event to Johnson Shutins State Park.  The OTA and Americorps crews will be teaming up in to work  Potosi and then shuttle down to Johnson Shutins State Park Visitor center to work on clearing storm damage and tread repair. One day or the week if you have the time.. we’d love to have you come down and help. \nWe’ll be shuttling from the OTA  facilities in Potosi or you can meet us at the JSI Visitor Center on Hwy N. \nBring your sawing duds\, saw and safety PPE..we’ll supply the gas and oil and shuttles. Might even be a meal or two in it for you. \nAs always\, we can’t do what we do without you. \nContact \nTerry Hawn or Kathie Brennan for questions and more detailed info

This course is for beginner level trail stewards. \n3C/5A: Working with Packstock: For centuries\, horses and mules have been used to accomplish work deep in the backcountry. Backcountry Horsemen of Missouri’s John Stewart will teach lead this course on how to work with packstock and work alongside them to get more work done on the ground. This course will be beneficial for all user groups. \n4C/2E: US Forest Service Crosscut Saw Training: In accordance with the Wilderness Act of 1964\, no mechanized or motorized machinery is allowed in federal wilderness areas. To accomplish trail maintenance in areas such as Missouri’s Irish\, Bell Mountain and Piney Creek Wildernesses\, crosscut saws are used to log out down trees to keep trails passable. Join Ed Sherman from the Mark Twain National Forest to learn how to operate these saws proficiently as a volunteer alongside a qualified crosscut B sawyer. \n2D: Trail Construction: Learn techniques to construct new trail using hand tools alongside the Mark Twain National Forest’s Jon Breithaupt. Best practices\, tools\, safety and efficiency strategies will provide even the experienced trail builder with new skills. \n3D: Intermediate Trail Maintenance: Have you been maintaining trails for a while at the entry level and are looking to grow your skillset? Ozark Trail Association’s Trail Construction and Maintenance Committee Chair Terry Hawn will help you take your trail maintenance skillset to the next level in this course. \n4D: Hand Tool Maintenance: Ozark Trail Association’s Mark Goforth will lead this course on how to properly maintain your hand tools for maximum efficiency and effectiveness in the field. Topics include proper storage\, sharpening\, handle maintenance and more. \n3E: Trail Decommissioning and Restoration: In the course participants will learn the best practices for restoring old trailways to their natural condition. This is an especially important skillset to have when poor segments of trail are re-routed and the old trail segment must be returned to nature. Ozark Trail Association’s Mark Goforth will teach this course. \n5B/5D: US Forest Service ATV Certification: In certain areas\, operating an All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) is the most efficient way to get trail work accomplished. The Mark Twain National Forest’s Jeremiah Privett and Ron Moon will host two four-hour courses that will give participants a certification to operate ATVs on non-motorized trails for administrative trail construction and maintenance purposes.

SUMMARY:2021 OT Hike and Float Challenge
DESCRIPTION:The OT Hike and Float Challenge is not just a great time\, it’s our largest fundraiser.  Now in its fifth year\, the event has generated $90\,000 to help maintain Missouri’s longest trail.  This year we’ve shortened the hike and added a float leg to the event. \nWhat is it? The Hike and Float Challenge is a fundraiser AND a hike-and-float adventure. Each registered hiker commits to raising $1\,250 for the Ozark Trail Association and participates in the Current River Challenge\, an 8-mile hike from Round Spring Campground through Echo Bluff State Park to Current River State Park\, and return to Round Spring via a Current River float. \nWhat if I don’t like to float\, or I can’t hike 8 miles? Don’t worry! You can still raise funds for the OTA and be a “virtual” hiker/floater. What a great way to support the organization! \nWhat if I don’t reach my fundraising goal? Don’t worry! It’s easier than you think! There are plenty of current and past participants that are willing to share their techniques and success stories. It is a fundraiser\, so we need you to make a good-faith effort. You can start by reaching out to family and friends and sponsors are the simplest and quickest way to achieve success! \nWhat’s in it for me? The best part of this fundraiser is the camaraderie of the group dedicated to supporting the OT and the OTA!  You’ll be treated to a festive weekend with free camping\, free food\, fellowship\, campfire\, music and all sorts of OTA/HIke and Float Challenge swag. \nWhere is the event? The hike portion is scheduled leave Round Spring Campground near Eminence\, MO 8AM Saturday\, September 11\, 2021.  Camping will be available to participants Friday night\, September 10 through Sunday morning\, September 12. \nHow do I get involved? If you’d like to be a part of this exciting event\, email otchallengehike@ozarktrail.com for more information. \nACT QUICKLY!!! Event is limited to the first 30 registrants.

SUMMARY:Spring Time down at Udall - Construction
DESCRIPTION:Let’s see if we can find some Spring Wild flowers this time! We are returning to Norfork Lake at the Udall campground to continue construction of new trail.  Gathering for all the fun\, friendship\, food and trail construction you would want for a grand weekend! Volunteers can arrive on Friday for a night of camping or gather Saturday morning at 8:30 am to do a short hike to the work site.  Heads up for those wanting a warmer place to stay\, you can contact Dawt Mill for availability of rooms for those who would like to be inside. \nWhen signing up please let us know if you are camping\, also if staying for dinner on Saturday evening so that we can prepare accordingly.  We also will consider a 1/2 day construction on Sunday with a breakfast at the campground before hand.  Let’s keep the momentum going! \nWhat to Bring:   You will need to dress for the weather and trail work.  Boots and layers of clothing work best.  You will also need to wear sturdy boots\, have a backpack\, rain gear\, plan for your lunches/snacks and have plenty of water.   Bring your own camping gear and personal items.  You will also need to bring a couple of gallons of water as the water will be off.  Also a camp chair for sitting around the campfire as you enjoy dinner Saturday night. \nPROVIDED:  PPE(hard hats\, work gloves\, safety glasses)\, tools and fun filled day of building new trail! \nIf you have any questions\, contact Terry Hawn at thawn@prodigy.net   See you soon!
