DESCRIPTION:If you have a day or 2 to spare — the OTA and Americorp will be working on the Ozark Trail out of Potosi. We’ll be fixing tread\, clearing trail for several days\ up and down the northern 5 miles of the OT. \nWe’ll meet up at the OTA house most days and head out to the work area. \nWe will be observing a strict covid protocol so no overnight stays at the OTA House as it will be full with Americorps and OTA Trail crew members. \nIf you have any cold or flu like symptoms\, have been exposed to anyone been in with similar symptoms\, have been to a medical facility in the last 2 weeks where covid patients might have exposed the facility … please do not come. \nOn any day you come out\, bring a lunch\, at least 2 liters of water and weather appropriate clothes and shoes.   The OTA provides all tools and safety equipment.   We will car pool to the work sites. \nEach day will be weather dependent so if the weather is bad — might be better to come out another day. SUMMARY:Dec 3-5 OT-OHT Build
DESCRIPTION:Here we go again — One more OT-OHT outing to end the 2021  season building the connection between Missouri and Arkansas. \nWe will again base out of the UDALL campground and will arrive Thursday evening and do prep on Friday. We’ll meet up at the Udall campground at 8:30 am on Saturday and go to the build site from there. We may meet somewhere else depending on where everyone winds up saying as there are other options available nearby such as Dawt Mill Resort and Rocky Top Campground. We’ll provide that information in the detailed event email the week prior to the event. \nThe OTA will provide dinner on Saturday night and a pot luck breakfast on Sunday Morning. Weather permitting we may also build on\nSunday morning until 12:00 pm. \nYou are responsible for your meals on Friday\, breakfast and lunch on Saturday. \nThere is  no water at the Udall campsite and we will have extra drinking fluids as well.  But bring your own water supply just in case. \nPrimitive camping at the Udall campground is available with a vault toilet and we will have alternate camping arrangements as we get closer to the build date. \nBring Sturdy work shoes ( hiking boots)\, long pants and be prepared for changeable weather. We’ll provide the gloves\,safety glasses\, helmets and tools. \nNow\, as to the general issue of trail building physical fitness… Building trail by hand is hard physical work. It puts stress on arms\, shoulders\, backs\, legs and of course the heart and lungs. There is usually some kind of hike in carrying tools ( weighing 3-5lbs each)\, a day pack which holds a lunch\, water ( 2 liters minimum)\, and any personal items an individual might need ( includes toiletry kit\, first aid kit\, rain gear\, cold weather layer(s)\, etc.)\n\n  The hike distance varies but is usually .5 mile or less but it can be more. So an individual needs to be able walk over rough terrain carrying a load of 10-20 lbs in rough terrain.\n\nThis is a 2-way walk ( in at beginning of the day and out at the end of the day). A typical trail day starts at 8:30am and ends around 3-3:30pm.\n\nWe do not expect the average volunteer  to build more than 20-25 ft of trail. Many may only build 5-10 ft…and that’s ok .. It is hard work and lots of breaks are encouraged and the event leaders watch over everyone to make sure they are not overextending themselves\, are hydrating\, eating and in generally good shape. We will stop anyone who is showing  physical stress.\nWe are still being covid cautious so if you have been exposed to covid\, been in a doctor’s office or hospital in the last 14 days prior to the event or you have symptoms consistent with covid\nplease do not come out. \n  \nContact Terry Hawn if you need more information. \nthawn@prodigy.net \n314 920 6376
