DESCRIPTION:To participate in the race\, register here: https://www.ultrasignup.com/register.aspx?did=82626 \nThe Devil’s Toll Race is a 13-mile dual discipline event across one of the most scenic and rugged landscapes Missouri’s Ozark Trail has to offer. SUMMARY:Sept 17-19 OTA Trail Skills College
DESCRIPTION:The OTA and Back Country Horsemen of Missouri are again hosting a Trail Skills College at Brushy Creek. \nThis is a limited availability event and most of the slots have been reserved for wait listed participants of several volunteer organizations that work on the Ozark Trail. \nRegistrations are currently limited but if we have slots open up we will let everyone know and accommodate as many additional signups as we can. \n  \nOzark Trail Skills College Course Descriptions \nSeptember 17-19\, 2021 \nBrush Creek Lodge \n1A/1B: CPR/First Aid: This course is required for all US Forest Service qualified sawyers. Jon Breithaupt from the Mark Twain National Forest will share best practices for planning and designing trails and will provide insight into the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and how it applied to approving new trails and certain trail maintenance work. \n3A: Trail Tread Maintenance: There is more to maintaining trail networks than logging out down trees and brushing out trail corridors. Terry Hawn from the Ozark Trail Association will lead this course on how to maintain trail tread to minimize water damage and maximize long term sustainability. \n4A/6A: Trail Crew Leadership: Ozark Trail Association President Kathie Brennan has been a practitioner in the field of trail crew leadership for many years. Course participants will gain an understanding of the responsibilities and traits necessary to lead a crew in the field successfully. \n2B/5C: US Forest Service Initial Chainsaw Certification: Experienced chainsaw operation instructor Joe Glenn will lead this two-day\, 16-hour course which will allow those who successfully complete it to buck down trees on trails on US Forest Service lands using a chainsaw. CPR/First Aid certification is required to participate in this course. \n2C: Introduction to Trail Maintenance: Join Ozark Trail Association’s Trail Construction and Maintenance Committee Chair Terry Hawn for the best practices on logging out down trees\, brushing back vegetation\, installing signs and trail blazes and more. This course is for beginner level trail stewards. \n3C/5A: Working with Packstock: For centuries\, horses and mules have been used to accomplish work deep in the backcountry. This course will be beneficial for all user groups. \n4C/2E: US Forest Service Crosscut Saw Training: In accordance with the Wilderness Act of 1964\, no mechanized or motorized machinery is allowed in federal wilderness areas. To accomplish trail maintenance in areas such as Missouri’s Irish\, Bell Mountain and Piney Creek Wildernesses\, crosscut saws are used to log out down trees to keep trails passable. Join Ed Sherman from the Mark Twain National Forest to learn how to operate these saws proficiently as a volunteer alongside a qualified crosscut B sawyer. \n2D: Trail Construction: Learn techniques to construct new trail using hand tools alongside the Mark Twain National Forest’s Jon Breithaupt. Topics include proper storage\, sharpening\, handle maintenance and more. \n3E: Trail Decommissioning and Restoration: In the course participants will learn the best practices for restoring old trailways to their natural condition. This is an especially important skillset to have when poor segments of trail are re-routed and the old trail segment must be returned to nature. Ozark Trail Association’s Mark Goforth will teach this course. \n5B/5D: US Forest Service ATV Certification: In certain areas\, operating an All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) is the most efficient way to get trail work accomplished. SUMMARY:2021 OT Hike and Float Challenge
DESCRIPTION:The OT Hike and Float Challenge is not just a great time\, it’s our largest fundraiser.  Now in its fifth year\, the event has generated $90\,000 to help maintain Missouri’s longest trail.  This year we’ve shortened the hike and added a float leg to the event. \nWhat is it? The Hike and Float Challenge is a fundraiser AND a hike-and-float adventure. Each registered hiker commits to raising $1\,250 for the Ozark Trail Association and participates in the Current River Challenge\, an 8-mile hike from Round Spring Campground through Echo Bluff State Park to Current River State Park\, and return to Round Spring via a Current River float. \nWhat if I don’t like to float\, or I can’t hike 8 miles? Don’t worry! You can still raise funds for the OTA and be a “virtual” hiker/floater. What a great way to support the organization! \nWhat if I don’t reach my fundraising goal? Don’t worry! It’s easier than you think! There are plenty of current and past participants that are willing to share their techniques and success stories. It is a fundraiser\, so we need you to make a good-faith effort. You can start by reaching out to family and friends and sponsors are the simplest and quickest way to achieve success! \nWhat’s in it for me? The best part of this fundraiser is the camaraderie of the group dedicated to supporting the OT and the OTA!  You’ll be treated to a festive weekend with free camping\, free food\, fellowship\, campfire\, music and all sorts of OTA/HIke and Float Challenge swag. \nWhere is the event? The hike portion is scheduled leave Round Spring Campground near Eminence\, MO 8AM Saturday\, September 11\, 2021.  Camping will be available to participants Friday night\, September 10 through Sunday morning\, September 12. \nHow do I get involved? If you’d like to be a part of this exciting event\, email otchallengehike@ozarktrail.com for more information. \nACT QUICKLY!!! Event is limited to the first 30 registrants.
